FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Find answers to common questions about borrowing, returns, cancellations, and book care.

Borrowing & Returns

How does the return window work?

Every Lightship selection comes with a fixed return window: a specific date range by which your books will be collected. This window is shared in your delivery message and visible on your Member Page. Return your books by the stated collection date, and your next selection will be curated and delivered on schedule.

Can we keep a book longer to reread or finish it?

Yes. If you would like to keep a title longer, send us a Rebook request before your return window closes (a note on your Member Page, WhatsApp or email), specifying the book and why your reader would like to hold onto it. We will check availability for the upcoming cycle:

  • If approved: The book stays with you and counts as part of your next lot (for example, an 8-book selection will include 7 new titles plus the one you are rereading).
  • If unavailable: If the title is already scheduled for another member, we will add your request to a waitlist. You will return the book within the arranged collection window, and we will reach out when it becomes available for a future cycle.
What happens if books are not returned or rebooked by the deadline?

Your membership continues on its original schedule without pausing or extending. The books must still be returned, and we may hold your next selection until the collection is complete.

Cancellations, Pauses & Transfers

Can I cancel, pause, or transfer my membership?

Because each selection is curated and scheduled specifically for each reader, membership fees are non-refundable once a selection has been curated or dispatched. If you need to discontinue your membership, you may transfer the remaining membership value to another member or apply it toward the purchase of books of equivalent value. Please contact us before your next curation date if you wish to cancel, pause, or transfer your membership.

Lost or Damaged Books

What happens if a book is lost or damaged?

If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, we may charge its replacement cost or offer the option to purchase the book at its current value. We will always share photographs and the applicable cost with you before charging.

What should I do if a book arrives damaged?

If a book arrives damaged, please notify us within 48 hours of delivery so we can resolve it promptly.

When will my first selection arrive?

Selections & Book Requests

What if my child doesn't enjoy a book?

Tell us through your Member Page. Their responses help us understand their preferences more deeply, refine future selections, and sometimes open up a useful conversation about what did, or didn't, connect.

Can we request a specific book, author, or series?

Yes. Browse The Beacon and request titles through your Member Page. Requested books are added to a future selection as soon as they are available for your reader.

Member Page & The Beacon

What can we do on the Member Page?

Your private Member Page lets you track your child's reading history and milestones, share feedback and notes on each selection, and request titles from The Beacon.

What is The Beacon?

The Beacon is Lightship's ever-growing database of thousands of children's books, personally tagged by topic, theme, identity, lived experience, passions, milestones, reading stage, format, and age. Anyone can browse; members can request books for upcoming selections.

Siblings & Multiple Readers

We have more than one reader at home. How does that work?

Each child can have a plan of their own, with their own selections delivered on their own rhythm.

Siblings can also share one delivery on our sibling plans. We curate a single selection with both readers in mind, recommending which books suit which child, with no fixed split between them. Children often read each other's books, so just tell us who read what and how it landed, and each child's reading journey stays their own.

If both children need full selections of their own, separate plans are the better fit. See our Membership Plans page for the options and pricing.
